My company is switching to Aluminum tanks from Steel. But I am a bit worried about the life of the tank. Do they coat the inside of the tank?

Do aluminum tanks last longer then steel tanks? Has anyones Aluminum tank ever cracked, or breached?

Is progress tank a good manufacture of aluminum tanks?

I see you're in California. I've never seen aluminum septic tanks in Ohio. The steel tanks I've seen are ancient - we don't use those anymore. In Ohio, We almost exclusively use concrete tanks. There are a few poly and fiberglass tanks out there, but they are only about 1-2% of the market.

This thread is about the tank on his truck, not the septic tank.

I ve had a alum. tank for 5 years now , keep it on pavement and you will have good service from alum. tanks , Go off road or in the field where tank would be subject to being in a bind and there could be problems, also be beware of acids from cafe cleaning of hood fans and other caustic cleaners...

I have a 4 year old progress tank and have no complaints at all. Remember to mount the tanks on a air ride truck only. My tank has a sump pit at the discharge end. Boy does that help keep the grit from building up inside the tank. My other truck only has a 6" discharge pipe welded in the bottom of the tank and I have been inside the tank 4 times in one year to clean the grit out.

We have a progress truck, it didnt come with air ride, can you put air ride on an international? One thing i hate about the truck is it is really rough driving. California has bad roads, and this truck feels them all. Could air ride help that? How much would it be to convert it?

Its an International 4300 with 2000 gal aluminum progress tanker truck.

Air ride makes a major differance. You would have to bring your truck to a shop and see if it could be done. Around here we would get a complete rear take-out with frame rails from a salvage yard and have it installed. Just make sure it has the same weight ratings, rim/tire size and gear ratio.

would alum. tanks be a bad idea for land application?

i ran steel tanks for my first 7 years in business. but i grew to the point of needing to carry more at one time but didnt want to have a CDL license. naturally with aluminum you are able to carry the most. ive used aluminum tanks since 99 without any problems of any kind concerning the aluminum tank. last year i was on a 2 lane FM road and there was a pickup pulling a hay trailer that appeared to be parked along the side of the road. as i was going to pass exactly when i was even with the back of his trailer, with no indication he darted left across in front of me. i was headed straight for his door and close enough to see his eyes. i veered left instead of hitting him in his door. i went through the ditch to the left then came up onto the side road which he was turning onto where i hit him with a glancing blow knocking him out of the way. i then went through another ditch and into a corn field where i rolled the truck over. everyone walked away that day but the truck had $48000 but the tank which had 1000 gallons of muddy water in it survived without even a crack in any of its weld and it took one hell of a hit. the man that builds my rigs mounts the tanks different than any of the others i have seen. the man that taught him his methods died last year and he was the pioneer of the aluminum tank business. he was refitting one to another truck a few years back that he built in the early 70's! i would say that is strong testimony! anyone in the central texas area that would like to see the wrecked truck and inspect the tank that took the hit, come by and take a look. my yard is at 1602 s. market hearne texas 77859. the insurance company had the tank tested, if it would have had any damage the truck would have totalled!
