Questions on dumping dry lime into tanks

Does it hurt to dump dry lime into septic tanks, mix it up and then pump it back out?

What is the purpose of adding lime to the septage when land applying?
To kill pathogens?

If so? What would this do the septic tank and drain field?

Will the lime kill the bacteria?

I was told that lime would kill the bacteria in the tank for sever months after pumping, causing the system to malfunction .
