I know this line of work is usually done by men, but my husband got hurt so I took over for a while (actually it will be about a year pretty soon). I am curious to know if there are any women out there who do this work full time. Pull the hoses, pump, drive, etc.

i sold a man a rig several years ago and this past year he passed away, she had no other choice but take up where he left off. she is doing just fine and actually enjoys it. she calls me every now and then. another lady that is in my area lost her job at a bank she had been at for several years and went into pumping. everyone thought that she didnt stand a chance(including myself) but i told her if she ran into trouble and needed me id help her any way i could. she has done very well and has only had to call me for help just a few times. if you enjoy it by all means dont let anyone tell you that you cant do it!

One of the most inspirational stories I've ever seen pass through any of our publications - http://www.promonthly.com/editorial/543/2007/12

I have one girl Pumper she is the best employee you could ask for, 36, blonde, happy, great with customers, when ever she enters a site the men go out of there way to help her, If it was me sitting there in the truck I could be held up for at least an hour bye the time vehicles are moved skips are loaded and other trucks are loaded /unloaded, when she turns up its as if the seas have parted and there is a clear run right to the tanks ! If she gets a flat theres 10 guys fighting to help change the tyre and if she needs help there are always plenty of men around when she is in the truck, I have told her she is getting her own calender shoot for 2010, she loves the job and the attention she gets from the sites she visits :) and I would have 3 more of her rather than the fat middle aged grumpy buggers I have at the moment.

My only concern in hiring a women would be a strength issue. In my area the lids can be up to 150lbs with some having no lifting handle. My guys have to pull those lids from holes 2-3' deep. My other concern is that a male homeowner will go out of his way to help a female with a heavy object. If that person hurts himself you can bet they will sue you. My customers always offer to help but my policy is to refuse the offer. Always remember to protect yourself from civil suits.

I can see how strength can be an issue when having/considering women pumpers. For the most part, the majority of the women in the industry either do office work or sales, myself being one of them. Personally, I cannot see myself out there pumping a truck. More power to the women who can suck it up. Its a tough job.
Its also nice to see that there are acually women pumpers. I find it refreshing.

I was out in the truck in real bad weather just before christmas and I decided to do one of the routes that my girl driver would normaly cover as I was near her patch, so I headed to the first customer and told him as was there to service his tank that was under his site cabin, He informed me very matter of factually that his tank was fine and that he did not need me, so I get in the truck and go to leave and remeber I need him to sign my paperwork to prove I have been there for his employers, he says what am I signing for ? I tell him that I drove 80miles to empty his tank and he refused to give me access and that we still had to charge for the visit as his company had us under contract, He looks me right in the eye and says " But your not our woman" I say well done sherlock I am glad you noticed (6 ft tall ,bald head, 17st ) he tells me that the tank is almost overflowing but does not want to let anyone empty it incase "The Lady" driver gets cross with him for letting someone else empty "Her" tank. NOW THATS THE WAY TO KEEP CUSTOMERS
