Help with overheating!! I have a few trucks with these vane pumps and they seem to be running far too hot when operating for more than 5 minutes or so (exhaust manifold melting plastic). Lots of oil and it seems to be getting to the right spots. Heavy smoke from the exhaust after a few minutes. I have been setting the sight feed valve to approx 20 drips per minute. Am I running the pump too fast from the PTO?? I'm told it should be running at no more than 1080 RPM's. I do not have proper manuals for these pumps and cannot seem to find them anywhere. Any ideas anyone.
The 1053 is rated 500cfm @15" @ 1000 rpm.
It's likely the 1080-rpm you are running on your trucks tachometer is not what the pump is doing. Unless your PTO is a 100% ratio.
If you do not know your PTO's percentage? Have a mechanic Tach your pump at any RPM and compare that to truck. You should be able to figure the percentage from there.
Check your vacuum relief valve setting. I would guess it should be set at 15"
#1 proper vacuum relief valve setting.
#2 RPM
#3 exhaust temperature. Not to exceed 350*, and if so go back to #1 and lower relief setting.

sounds like a vacuum restriction, what size hose are you running? how much vacuum when it heats up? I had a 750 on my last truck and it was bulletproof. The only time it heated up was when it was pulling very hard for quite a long time.(20 minutes or more at heavy vacuum)
