We are looking at purchasing a new Tap Cutter for removing protruding ABS Taps. Any pros and cons to certain types or otherwise. This would typically be 8" to 10" Clay Tile Pipe.

I read this old post and thought what we did might be of help to others.
We cut out two PVC laterals that were pushed almost to the back of an 8" main. I used a piece of 7.5" thin wall steel pipe 16" long, welded band saw blade on outside and inside of one end, welded 2" x 1/4 flat stock (set inside 2" deep) with hole in center, to the inside of the other end. I made several 2" deep cuts around the flat stock end of pipe and folded the pipe in to keep it from hanging up on the sewer pipe on the return. We bolted this to a root saw motor and it worked great! Since we already had the root saw motor, the total cost of the tap cutter was less than $150.00, material and fab time. You must weld band saw blade on inside and outside of pipe or it will not work, if you dont fold the pipe in on the side that bolts to the root saw, it will hang up on the return (trust me, I learned the hard way on the first one)
